Ultralyd hjerte, hund og katt del I

13.april - 14.april
Påmeldingsfrist
29.mars 2019

This course is designed to provide the veterinary practitioner a basic understanding of the theoretical and practical base of echocardiography in small animals. Topics included in this course are the physics behind echocardiography, cardiac anatomy and physiology, standard 2D views (left and right sided), standard measurements. The participants will rotate in hands-on sessions through different stations supervised by experienced instructors for individual coaching of how to obtain echocardiographic imaging planes.

Day 1
Lectures concerning basic physics of echocardiography, cardiac anatomy and physiology,
and basic applications from the right parasternal approach, standard imaging in 2D, normal and abnormal morphology of the heart. Practical demonstration of a cardiological examination
Echolab: hands-on in small groups

Schedule
08:30-09:00 Registration
09:00-09:45 Cardiovascular anatomy and physiology (ILJ)
09:50-10:35 Ultrasound basic principles and physics (JH)
10:35-10:50 Coffee break
10:50-12:00 Basic applications from the right parasternal approach (JH)
12:00-13:00 Lunch
13:00-16:30 Practical echocardiographic training (JH, ILJ, ST)

Day 2
Lecture: Basic applications from the left view, standard echocardiographic measurements
in 2D and in M-mode.
Echolab: hands-on in small groups

Schedule
09:00-09:45 Basic applications from the left side (ILJ)

Jens Häggström was born and brought up in Uppsala, Sweden, where he also completed his basic veterinary training 1990. He earned his Doctorate degree in 1996 with a thesis concerning myxomatous mitral valve disease in dogs. He became an Associate Professor in Uppsala the year 2000, and in 2003 he became full Professor in Internal Medicine. Jens Haggstrom is author and co-author of a large number of original papers in Internationally distributed peer-viewed Journals, Congress abstracts and Textbook chapters, including the 2000, 2005 and 2010 Editions of Ettinger and Feldman’s “Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine”. His main interests in research concerns acquired heart disease in dogs and cats (MMVD, DCM and Cardiomyopathy in cats), pathophysiology and therapy of heart failure, and genetic risk factors for heart disease in dogs and cats. Jens Haggstrom is a Diplomate of ECVIM since 1998 and is the past President of the European Society of Veterinary Cardiology (ESVC).

Ingrid Ljungvall works at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden. Ljungvall’s main research focus is acquired heart disease in dogs and cats. She is particularly interersted in evaluation and optimization of available diagnostic methods of heart disease; including both diagnostic imaging methods (echocardiography) and assessment of various biomarkers of cardiac disease. In 2011 she defended her thesis about left ventricular remodeling and function in dogs with different severities of naturally acquired MMVD. The thesis included work about assessment of the left ventricle using novel realtime three dimensional (3D) echocardiographic techniques. She has also since then been involved in several research projects evaluating various echocardiographic techniques for cardiac chamber assessment.
